Monster Teeth is the creative extension of artist Bryn DeHass. Born in the misty mountains of western Virginia, forged an explorative awakening in the northern hills, sharpened expressions by the scorching coast, and now returns to the valley to unify, thrive, and build something new.
Monster Teeth's focus has primarily been an exploration of rhythm and melody. Early on in creation, his influences rested with mainly lyrical, emotional artists (Bright Eyes, Death Cab). The driving forces of the melodies continue to impact his music. In 2009, he discovered experimental and sample driven music (Grimes, Animal Collective, Dan Deacon, Purity Ring) which flipped the way he thought about creating music.
RELEASES:
Undertow (2015) was recorded in Staunton, VA with the artist Baby Hair assisting heavily in production.
New Braid (2016). This album I really began finding my foothold in composing.
$loppy (2018). A rough cut of new technologies and a new style of music. A tough reflection.
"My previous albums, which I leave up, have all helped me experiment in songwriting, while still playing with new recording techniques. Hearing them even now helps me really learn how to truly hear myself in the music I create, as well as being able to truly visualize my growth in the medium." - Bryn DeHass (Monster Teeth)
Mede (2020) came out as a surprise after a year and a half of no releases. This album was an eruption of thoughts and emotions that materialized from processing his father’s passing. The shape of Monster Teeth really came together following Mede. In 2021, he released Volume 1 as a collection of singles he had written and released throughout the year. The album was the final stepping stone to understanding my process.
Slippery Slope (2021) released in November 2021. The production took its most confident steps into maturity, and each track creates its own experience. A warm blend of modern r&b, indie synthwave, and experimental hip hop, the album creates its own avenues and drags you with it. He currently work mainly from my studio in Winston-Salem, NC and is recording new material with fresh collaborations with familiar artists like Baby Hair, Ming Kurray, and Be Careful.
